I love the image. It’s absolutely beautiful, but I don’t totally agree with the message behind it.
South Park may be a stereotypically crude animated series (that I’m totally in love with), but it actually often offers inspirational life lessons. In episode 110, Wendy breaks up with Stan. He gets buried in depression and decides to join the Goth Kids. At the same time, Butters falls in love with a Raisins’ girl (Raisins is basically Hooters with little girls as the waitresses) and conjures up a relationship between them, when the girl is just flirting to get better tips. At the end of the episode, the girl tells Butters that they’re not dating, which in his mind, he thinks that she is breaking up with him. He walks outside, sits on the curb in pouring rain, and balls his eyes out. Coincidentally, Stan and the Goth Kids are walking on the sidewalk and spot him. Stan asks Butters what’s wrong and he tells him that he’s been dumped. So, the Goth Kids ask Butters if he wants to join their group because he’s also equally miserable. He answers: “Yeah, and I’m sad! But at the same time I’m really happy that something can make me feel that sad. It’s like—it makes me feel alive, y’know? It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now, is if I felt somethin’ really good before, so I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I’m feelin’ is, like a beautiful sadness.”
That line was one of the most inspirational things I’ve ever heard in my life—and I heard it from South Park.
